Theater Workshop

Theater of the Imagination, with Melissa Nussbaum Freeman

Remember that special line from a song, that sentimental Polaroid snapshot, that ticket from a once-in-a-lifetime boat ride? They are stories waiting to be revealed, magical keys to unlocking the treasure trove that is our imagination. In the Theater of the Imagination Workshop, students are invited to discover their own pieces building on the material that spontaneously bubbles up through theatre exercises and games. Our emphasis will be on "Authentic Movement" discovered in improvisation (with music, objects, texts, and each other) and on shared observation (personal and group). The focus is on the creative process, and the product will be personal, experimental, and transformational.

Melissa Nussbaum Freeman

In 1985, the year of the big earth quake, I moved to Mexico, looking for my heart´s home. I found it in a mountain town, where I sent down a long taproot, worked as a healer – acupuncturist, zero balancer, midwife, and apprentice to Dońa Paula. I gave birth to my son and spent many hours in Bon-Buddhist retreats – all of which informed me to study theatre full-time, culminating in a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the Centro Morelense de Las Artes, Cuernavaca, Mexico. I returned to the US in 2009, and since then, have lived in Provincetown, MA and Tepoztlán, Mexico. My art (my own one-woman shows, comedy plays, television, movies) is about bringing all of me to bear in one place. I like when I serve as a bridge between cultures, widening the links, mending the cracks. I believe in the power of theatre to do this, to do the next right thing… and more.
